Pe 24 ianuarie 1859 nu s-a făcut doar o unire pe hârtie. S-a făcut o unire în suflete.
Îmi imaginez că sunt un țăran simplu, cu mâinile crăpate de muncă și cu ochii obosiți de atâtea ierni grele. Stau pe marginea drumului, cu căciula în mână, și aud zumzetul mulțimii. Oamenii nu mai vorbesc în șoaptă. Vorbesc tare. Cu speranță. Cu teamă. Cu o bucurie care parcă nu-și găsește locul în piept.
“Se spune că Moldova și Țara Românească vor avea un singur domn. Unul singur, pentru toți”. Numele lui trece din gură în gură: Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
Nu-l văd ca pe un boier mare, ci ca pe un om care ne-a înțeles. Care a știut că fără unire suntem slabi, risipiți, ușor de strivit. În acea zi, la Iași, Cuza este ales domn al Moldovei. Iar câteva zile mai târziu, pe 24 ianuarie, este ales și la București, domn al Țării Românești.
A fost un act de curaj. Un act de inteligență politică. Dar mai ales, a fost un act de voință a poporului.
Pentru noi, țăranii, Unirea nu însemna discursuri sau documente. Însemna speranța că:
- pământul va fi al nostru,
- legile vor fi mai drepte,
- copiii nu vor mai fi obligați să plece departe,
- iar țara nu va mai fi ruptă în bucăți.
Îl privesc pe Cuza ca printr-o ceață de iarnă. Nu știu ce va urma, dar simt că ceva s-a schimbat pentru totdeauna. Parcă aerul e altfel. Parcă drumurile nu mai duc doar spre satul meu, ci spre o țară întreagă.
Unirea Principatelor Române a fost primul pas spre România modernă. Fără 24 ianuarie 1859, nu ar fi existat 1 Decembrie 1918. A fost începutul drumului. Temelia.
Ani mai târziu, Regina Maria avea să înțeleagă și să spună în cuvinte ceea ce noi, oamenii simpli, simțeam fără să știm să rostim: că România nu e doar un teritoriu, ci o legătură de sânge, suferință și speranță.
Astăzi, când privim înapoi, nu trebuie să vedem doar o lecție de istorie. Ci o lecție de unitate. Pentru că atunci, în frigul lui ianuarie 1859, românii au ales să fie împreună.
Iar eu, țăranul de atunci, ridic privirea și spun, cu aceeași credință:
Unde-s mulți, puterea crește.
